HORA FETELOR

Romanian

PRONUNCIATION: HAW-rah FEH-teh-lohr

TRANSLATION: Dance for women

SOURCE: Dick Oakes= learned this dance from Mihai David who learned it while dancing with his brother, Alexandru, in the Romanian State Folk Dance Ensemble. He presented it at the 1974 San Diego State University Folk Dance Conference and the 1974 Stockton Folk Dance Camp.

BACKGROUND: The dance is from the area around the town of Calafat in Oltenia. The ethnographic region of Oltenia is green and mountainous and has some of southeastern Romania's oldest surviving artifacts, edifices, and folklore, with little Turkish, Russian, or Greek influence. Contrary to its name, this dance is not restricted to women. Calafat is a city in Dolj County, Romania, on the river Danube, opposite the Bulgarian city of Vidin, to which it is linked by ferryboat.

FORMATION:Open cir or lines of mixed M and W facing ctr with hands joined at shldr height, elbows bent, in "W" pos. Dancers face ctr with head and shldrs but have hips facing to R.
